On February 28th, 2023, SAAPRI team members voted, served the polls, and participated in poll watching at the Municipal Elections at various Chicago locations. In collaboration with our partner organizations Asian Americans Advancing Justice – Chicago, the Chicago Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights, and election officials, SAAPRI has been working hard to ensure protections for language minority workers.
Turnout matters. The 2023 Municipal Election voter turnout of 35%+, one of the highest in the past twenty years, however is still indicative of generally low voter turnout, making us wonder why so many of us decided to stay home. Low voter turnout is an important reminder for the work that still needs to be done to ensure protection of the rights of our diverse electorate.
That’s why ahead of the April 4th mayoral runoff, SAAPRI remains committed to working towards protections for our South Asian American voters’ rights.
