On October 18th, 2018, SAAPRI and the University of Chicago’s South Asian Student’s Association (SASA), Indo-American Center (IAC), and Chicago Board of Election Commissioners co-hosted an all-in-one 2018 Midterm election event with dinner, conversation, and action.
The first half of the event involved a discussion exploring South Asian identity and political participation. Questions discussed included: How does being South Asian impact your understanding of politics? What issues impact us as South Asians? Why is there a perception that South Asians don’t vote? Does voting and political representation matter? This was a time for students to share their views, experiences, and stories.
The second half of the event included phone-banking to fellow Asian-American voters in our city, a concrete action step that all students can take to increase civic engagement in our communities. Students were able to register to vote, learn how to become a paid election judge on Election Day, and stay engaged this election season and beyond.
Thank you to all those who attended our event!
